Double-Check Your Diamond (In Under 2 Minutes)

Double-Check Your Diamond (In Under 2 Minutes)

So, you’ve got your eye on a beautiful diamond, and it comes with a GIA or IGI report. But how do you actually know that the piece of paper matches the stone in front of you?

The good news is that you don’t have to be a diamond expert to verify your stone. Here is a quick, three-step guide to peace of mind.

1. Find the "Secret" Serial Number

Most certified diamonds (especially lab-grown ones and modern natural ones) have a tiny serial number laser-engraved right on the "girdle" (the widest outer edge of the diamond). It’s so small you usually need a jeweler’s loupe to see it, but it’s there, ike a tiny VIN number for your gem.

2. Match the Number to Your Certificate

Take the number from your GIA or IGI physical report and compare it to the laser inscription on the diamond. They should match perfectly.

3. Use the Official Online Check

The safest way to verify a diamond is to go straight to the source. You don't have to trust the seller; you trust the lab.

Just type in your report number, and the lab will show you the digital version of your certificate. If the specs, the date, and the "plot" (the map of the diamond's unique inclusions) match what you have in your hand, you’re golden.

The Bottom Line

At the end of the day, a certificate is only as good as the lab that issued it. That’s why we only work with GIA and IGI, the two most trusted names in the world.
